Hair Coats: A versus AA

What is a Double A (AA) hair coat.  This coat would be hair both winter and summer. Here at Avery's Katahdins we do have Double A hair coats. The photos are of a A hair coat (full of wooly fibres in the winter but sheds clean in the spring/summer) and a Double A hair coat. (not a wooly fibre to be found and shed much quicker, more efficient in the spring). There is a debate that a winter hair coat is not as warm as a wooly hair coat. I have yet to see any of my sheep cold, and our winters are a challenge at the best of times. Where ewes are concerned, it takes energy to shed and since most ewes are having lambs in the spring, they often don't shed until later on, closer to summer. My AA hair coat ewes shed the same as they normally would, indicating to me that releasing a hair coat is easier than releasing a wooly fibre coat. This post is based on my opinion and  experience.

Eli has such a heavy winter hair coat that he looks like he has bed head  most days.
